Punjab Launches COMPASS Curriculum for BS Nursing Program

its four-year BS Nursing program. This newly designed academic structure will be implemented in all UHS-affiliated nursing institutions across Punjab starting this academic year. Endorsed by the UHS Board of Studies in Nursing, under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, the COMPASS framework introduces a block-based, competency-driven approach to nursing education, moving away from conventional teaching formats. Core Principles and Enhanced Clinical Focus

COMPASS, an acronym for Competency-based, Outcome-based, Multicultural, Patient-centered, Assessment, Skills, and Safety, redefines nursing education by emphasizing real-world applicability. One of its notable features is the increase in clinical credit hours from 35 to 54. Students will now engage in hands-on hospital training from their first year, spending three days weekly in clinical settings with alternating shifts to foster deep exposure to patient care practices and interprofessional collaboration.

Introduction of Cultural Competency and Skill Development

According to Prof Rathore, the COMPASS curriculum is the first in Pakistan to incorporate cultural competency training, preparing students for diverse healthcare environments. The comprehensive academic design includes 72 carefully curated courses and provides students with training in more than 200 clinical skills. This ensures graduates are not only technically adept but also culturally and professionally prepared for global healthcare standards.

Integrated Learning and Simulation-Based Training

The curriculum bridges theoretical learning with clinical application through simulation labs and patient-centered learning modules. The spiral progression model spans eight semesters, with each level building on the previous one to gradually increase the depth and complexity of knowledge and skills.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Faculty Preparation

To maintain high academic quality, UHS will carry out unannounced inspections at affiliated colleges each semester. These visits will assess how well institutions are adhering to clinical rotation plans, class schedules, student documentation, and feedback processes. Additionally, to ensure successful adoption of the new curriculum, intensive faculty training workshops will be held from June 1 to 15, equipping nursing educators with the tools to effectively teach using the COMPASS framework.
