HEC Makes AI Course Compulsory for All Degree Programs

Higher Education Commission HEC has instructed all public and private universities across the country to incorporate a compulsory three-credit-hour course on Artificial Intelligence AI into every undergraduate and postgraduate degree program. Three-Credit AI Module to Be Introduced from Fall 2026

In its official advisory, the commission highlighted the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence in various sectors, including education, healthcare, economic development, and governance. It emphasized that as AI continues to transform industries and daily life, higher education institutions must ensure that students develop a basic understanding of this emerging field. This includes knowledge of fundamental AI principles, as well as awareness of important issues such as ethical considerations, data protection, transparency, and the broader societal consequences of AI technologies.

According to the directive, universities have flexibility in how they introduce the course. The AI module may be offered as a standalone elective, integrated as an interdisciplinary subject, or included as an allied course within the existing structure of a degree program. This approach allows institutions to tailor the course format according to their academic frameworks while still meeting the commission’s core requirements.

The HEC further advised that the curriculum should address essential AI concepts, explore its applications across different academic disciplines, and cover critical ethical concerns such as fairness, accountability, and responsible use of technology. Universities are encouraged to align the course content with the specific needs and focus areas of their respective programs, ensuring relevance for students from diverse fields of study.

The commission has announced that this requirement will take effect starting from the Fall 2026 academic session. From that point onward, all universities will be expected to implement the AI course as part of their regular academic offerings, marking a significant step toward integrating advanced technological knowledge into higher education nationwide.
