UoP Shuts Down Nine BS Programs Over Declining Admissions

The University of Peshawar, one of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s largest public universities, has announced the closure of nine Bachelor of Studies BS departments starting from the Fall 2025 semester due to extremely low student enrollment. The students can get the latest updates of UoP Shuts Down Nine BS Programs Over Declining Admissions.

Falling Enrollment Forces UoP to Discontinue Multiple Departments

According to official reports, the BS programs being discontinued include Development Studies, Geography, Geology, History, Social Anthropology, Statistics, Logistics and Supply Chain Analytics, Human Development and Family Studies, and Home Economics.

Admissions Below Required Limit

Under university regulations, any program with fewer than 15 enrolled students must be suspended. This year, admissions fell significantly below that threshold. Only one student applied for BS Human Development and Family Studies, while BS Development Studies, Home Economics, and Logistics and Supply Chain Analytics each received two applications. Three students applied for BS Geography and BS History, five for BS Social Anthropology, seven for BS Statistics, and 14 for BS Geology.

As a result, the administration issued a notification to discontinue these programs and instructed departments to guide the affected students toward alternative degree options through the Directorate of Admissions.

Experts Cite Weak Planning and Outdated Curriculum

Academic experts believe the closures stem from poor administrative planning and failure to modernize course content. They pointed out that several other departments — including mathematics, chemistry, Urdu, Pashto, journalism, social work, disaster management, and urban planning — also saw below-average admissions this year.

In contrast, disciplines such as pharmacy, computer science, English, psychology, physics, law, environmental sciences, international relations, criminology, and management sciences continue to attract adequate enrollment.

A university spokesperson noted that students are increasingly favoring fields with stronger job prospects, particularly in IT and health sciences, while traditional humanities subjects have lost appeal.

Province-Wide in Higher Education Enrollment

Educational analyst Yousaf Ali linked the overall decline in admissions across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to systemic issues. He observed that many universities and colleges offer identical BS programs without coordination, yet the tuition fees vary widely. For instance, while UoP charges about Rs150,000 annually for a BS degree, public colleges offer similar degrees for around Rs14,000.

He added that UoP’s ongoing financial problems and frequent fee hikes are discouraging students, while the rapid expansion of higher education institutions — now totaling 44 universities and nearly 1,000 colleges across the province — has further divided student enrollments.

Ali also warned that several degree programs have lost relevance in the modern job market. He urged the provincial government to reassess the BS education structure and modernize curricula to align with today’s academic and professional demands.
