Pakistan Introduces Nationwide SEL Initiative
The Government of Pakistan has launched a countrywide initiative to incorporate Social-Emotional Learning SEL into school education, aiming to enhance students’ emotional health, social awareness, and overall personal growth alongside their academic progress. New Education Program Focuses on Emotional Intelligence and Personal Development
This program is being implemented through the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training in collaboration with the Federal Directorate of Education, and in partnership with Right To Play. The joint effort highlights a strong commitment to modernizing the education system and addressing students’ broader developmental needs.
As part of the initiative, each grade will be provided with 25 structured SEL lessons throughout the academic year. These lessons are carefully designed to help students build essential life skills, including emotional control, empathy for others, teamwork, cooperation, and effective problem-solving.
A key component of the program is teacher preparation. Educators will receive specialized training to help them foster inclusive, supportive, and engaging classroom environments. Officials believe that well-trained teachers will play a central role in ensuring the success of this initiative.
In addition, participating schools will be equipped with sports materials to encourage play-based learning. This approach is expected to help students develop leadership qualities, resilience, and collaborative skills in a more interactive setting.
Education authorities have described this initiative as a major step toward holistic education, where equal importance is given to academic success and personal development. The agreement for the program was formally signed in Islamabad, with senior officials and partner organizations present at the event.
Officials further emphasized that this effort is aimed at shaping well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to society, ultimately promoting a more compassionate and forward-thinking nation.
