HEC Defers Mandatory HAT and GRE Exams for Advanced Degree Admissions

HEC Defers Mandatory HAT and GRE Exams for Advanced Degree Admissions

The Higher Education Commission HEC of Pakistan has officially announced a significant shift in its testing policy for postgraduate academic streams. According to an official notification issued by the Coordination Division in Islamabad on May 25, 2026, the apex regulatory body has decided to defer the mandatory implementation of centralized entrance evaluations for advanced university admissions. The policy update extends a crucial preparation window for higher education institutions and prospective candidates nationwide, temporarily shifting the structural timeline for state-sanctioned eligibility compliance.

Revised Operational Timeline for Level 7 and Level 8 Programs

This sudden regulatory extension changes the immediate enrollment requirements for the upcoming academic year. Based on formal requests submitted by numerous universities and Degree Awarding Institutions DAIs seeking adequate administrative time to smoothly integrate the new testing frameworks, the commission has delayed its previous directive. The initial mandate, which required the universal implementation of the GRE/HAT-General and GRE/HAT-Subject tests administered via the Education Testing Council ETC, was originally scheduled to disrupt the incoming Fall 2026 registration cycle.

Under the newly authorized structural amendment, the mandatory centralized test requirement has been deferred to take effect from the Fall 2027 admissions cycle onward. Consequently, individual higher education centers retain their conventional selection criteria for Level 7 Masters/MPhil and Level 8 PhD programs for the immediate term. This operational delay gives campus admission boards the necessary flexibility to upgrade their departmental systems, while offering advanced degree candidates an extended period to prepare for the rigorous standardized evaluation models.
