Pakistan Introduces Flexible Admission Policy for Arts Students

Pakistan Introduces Flexible Admission Policy for Arts Students

Pakistan’s education authorities have announced a significant policy change, giving students more flexibility when selecting their intermediate-level academic streams. The Inter-Board Coordination Commission IBCC, during its 183rd meeting in Karachi, decided to remove the long-standing restriction linking intermediate group selection to a student’s matriculation background. Arts Students Can Now Switch to Science and Other Streams

Under the new rules, students who completed matric in the arts stream can now enroll in pre-medical, pre-engineering, ICS, or other intermediate groups. Officials stated that this change is intended to remove barriers that have historically limited students’ academic and career opportunities.

O- and A-Level Students to Receive Science Equivalence

The IBCC also approved an adjustment for O- and A-level students. Those who have passed two major subjects will now be granted equivalence in the science group instead of humanities, ensuring their academic strengths are better reflected in the certification process.

Future Plans for Flexible SSC Curriculum

During the meeting, officials discussed the potential replacement of the traditional science and arts divisions at the matric level with a standard Secondary School Certificate SSC that offers flexible elective options. A final decision on this proposal will be made at a later date.

Implementation and Support for Students

IBCC Executive Director Dr. Ghulam Ali Mallah stated that these new policies are designed to promote student growth and eliminate outdated restrictions. The commission has already started issuing science-group equivalence certificates to eligible O/A-level students. Colleges and boards will soon receive instructions to implement open enrollment for first-year admissions in the upcoming academic session.
