Over 400 Punjab Private MBBS Seats Vacant After Final Merit List

For the first time in recent years, private medical colleges in Punjab have been unable to fill all their MBBS seats, leaving a total of 426 positions vacant despite the release of the fifth admission list. The admission statistics reveal that 109 candidates offered seats chose not to enroll at all, while 317 students withdrew after initially securing admission. This unprecedented trend underscores a growing concern within Pakistan’s medical education sector. Hundreds of MBBS Seats Remain Unfilled Amid Career Uncertainty
Education analysts point to multiple factors behind this emerging crisis. Chief among them are limited employment opportunities, inadequate pay scales, and uncertain career progression for newly graduated doctors. Even after completing mandatory house jobs, many graduates face difficulty securing further training positions or specialized programs. In addition, salary structures remain disproportionately low, discouraging students from pursuing costly medical education. For instance, medical officers in private hospitals earn approximately Rs40,000 per month, which is less than the Rs. 60,000 earned by house officers, despite the years of expensive training that can exceed Rs15 million.
Concerns over the declining quality of education in several private medical institutions have exacerbated the situation. Problems cited include rigid attendance requirements, minimal clinical exposure, insufficiently equipped teaching hospitals, and weak enforcement of regulatory standards. Observers have criticized the oversight authorities, arguing that inadequate monitoring has allowed some colleges to operate without proper infrastructure, directly affecting the quality of medical training provided.
The combination of these financial and academic challenges has forced students to rethink medicine as a viable career path. Current estimates indicate that between 20,000 to 30,000 doctors remain unemployed in Pakistan, fueling hesitation among prospective medical students. As a result, the ongoing vacancies in private medical colleges reflect not just admission gaps but a broader structural issue in Pakistan’s healthcare education and workforce planning.
This situation has raised alarms among policymakers, educators, and healthcare professionals, highlighting the need for comprehensive reforms in both medical education standards and employment frameworks for young doctors. Without meaningful intervention, the trend of unfilled seats and declining interest in medicine is likely to continue, posing long-term challenges to the country’s healthcare sector.
