Up to 30% Admissions Decrease in Punjab Universities

Public universities across Punjab are witnessing a significant in admissions this year, raising serious concerns among educators and policymakers about the future of higher education in the province. Data from the Punjab Higher Education Department reveals that enrollment in undergraduate, MPhil, and PhD programs has fallen between 20% and 30% in several institutions. Prestigious universities such as Punjab University Lahore, Government College University Faisalabad, and Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan have reported lower-than-expected intake, while smaller campuses in areas like Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, and Narowal are facing even steeper declines, struggling to attract students in high-demand programs. Economic Pressure and Outdated Degrees Blamed for Falling Numbers
Academics attribute the decline to economic hardship, obsolete curricula, and a widening gap between higher education and employment opportunities. Prof. Dr. Munawar Sabir, former chairman of Punjab University’s Geography Department, noted that even public institutions have become unaffordable for many families once hostel fees, transportation, books, and other costs are considered. Parents from rural and low-income urban communities say inflation has made university education a financial impossibility. For example, Shamsa Bibi from a village near Narowal shared that her high-achieving son had to abandon his plans for university and instead work in a factory due to financial constraints.
Shift Toward Skills-Based Learning and Freelancing
Experts also criticize universities for failing to update their programs to meet modern industry needs. “Many institutions are still teaching in the same way they did two decades ago,” said Prof. Dr. Muhammad Arshad Ali. “With no employable skills, students see little reason to invest years in a degree.” As a result, more youth are pursuing short technical courses, professional certifications, and digital skills training that offer quicker employment prospects. The rise of freelancing and gig economy opportunities has further shifted interest away from traditional degrees.
Sporadic Reforms Fail to Keep Pace with Industry Needs
While some universities have introduced modern programs in IT, data science, and entrepreneurship, such reforms remain inconsistent and scattered. Career counseling services are rare, and few institutions have strong collaborations with industries to ensure graduates can transition into relevant jobs. Faculty members are particularly concerned about the sharp decline in MPhil and PhD enrollments, warning that it could slow research output and academic progress in the province.
Experts Call for Urgent Government Action
Education specialists are urging the government to address the crisis through targeted measures. Proposed actions include subsidized or free transportation for students, expanded scholarships for underprivileged families, lower entry test fees, streamlined online admission processes, and a comprehensive curriculum overhaul to align academic programs with market demands. Without immediate reform, experts warn, Punjab’s higher education sector could face long-term setbacks in both academic and research capacities.
