University of Peshawar Asks for Rs 50 Billion in 2025 Budget

University of Peshawar Joint Action Committee JAC has strongly criticized the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for its ongoing neglect of public universities in the province. The students can get latest updates of UoP Seeks Rs. 50 Billion Allocation in Upcoming Budget.

During an urgent session chaired by JAC President Dr. Zakirullah Jan, the committee urged the provincial government to earmark at least Rs. 50 billion for higher education in the 2025–26 budget. The JAC stressed that this funding is vital to ensure regular payment of staff salaries and pensions, restart stalled academic and research activities, and sustain the growth of universities.

Academic Leaders Warn of Crisis Amid Financial Strain on Higher Education

The meeting included representatives from Class III, Class IV, and sanitation workers, who echoed the concerns and warned that if their financial demands are not met, they will initiate widespread protests across the province.

The committee highlighted that under the 18th Amendment, the responsibility for funding higher education lies with the provincial government. While Punjab and Sindh have consistently supported their public universities, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has failed to meet this constitutional duty.

The province’s universities are grappling with serious budget shortages, which have disrupted daily operations, halted research projects, and caused delays in salary disbursement. As a result, academic standards are deteriorating rapidly.

The JAC also called on newly appointed vice chancellors to speak out and advocate for the necessary financial support, warning that continued inaction could have devastating long-term consequences for higher education in the region.

Dr. Zakirullah Jan concluded the meeting with a clear message: “We cannot afford to remain passive while our universities fall apart. It’s time for the provincial government to take responsibility and act decisively.”
