Insights from BECS Leadership
During his visit, Secretary Mahbub was accompanied by Hameed Khan Niazi, Director General of BECS, who briefed him on student enrollment, academic progress, and the key challenges faced by the school. The Secretary interacted with students and teachers, commending the school for providing valuable learning opportunities in an underserved area.
Role and Challenges of BECS Schools
BECS schools typically operate as one-room, community-based centers managed by a single teacher. They cater to multiple grade levels, offer free certificate-based education up to Class 5, and run accelerated learning programs for older students. Despite their importance, these schools often struggle with inadequate infrastructure, limited learning resources, and insufficient teacher support.
Support for Non-Formal Education
Under the Ministry’s newly launched “Support a Non-Formal Education NFE School” initiative, Secretary Mahbub formally adopted the Kilinger school. This program allows individuals and institutions to support non-formal schools through various financial packages, providing stationery, workbooks, teaching aids, puzzles, classroom materials, and hygiene supplies. Donors are kept informed throughout the process, with regular updates on the school’s progress.
Empowering Education Through Collaboration
The Secretary highlighted that both individual and institutional contributions can significantly improve learning outcomes for children in non-formal schools. These schools play a crucial role in educating children who are unable to attend formal schools but are eager to pursue their education.
