Authorities in Lahore are considering a three-day school closure each week to safeguard students from the city’s worsening air quality. The proposal suggests keeping schools closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to limit exposure to hazardous air. Smog Reaches Critical Levels in Lahore
Lahore’s smog has reached concerning levels, with air quality indexes exceeding safe limits. The Environmental Protection Agency EPA of Punjab recently reported an average Air Quality Index AQI of 208 for Lahore, highlighting the city’s standing as one of the most polluted worldwide. Environmental authorities are expected to make a final decision on the school closure plan after an early November review.
Lahore: Pakistan’s Most Polluted City
The deteriorating air quality has earned Lahore the title of the most polluted city in Pakistan and the second most polluted globally. In response, the Punjab government has announced a ‘green lockdown’ targeting the most heavily affected areas to help curb pollution levels.
New Restrictions to Mitigate Pollution
As part of the green lockdown, the Environmental Protection Department has imposed multiple restrictions, including a ban on construction in specific zones and limits on auto-rickshaw access. The measures aim to reduce sources of particulate matter in the air.
Additional Rules in High-Pollution Areas
The green lockdown further restricts the use of commercial generators and bans outdoor barbecues after 8 pm in high-pollution zones. The areas under these restrictions include Abbott Road, Empress Road, and the vicinity surrounding Queen Mary Road, where pollution levels have been especially concerning.
