Punjab Govt Plans to Privatize 30,000 Schools
The Punjab government has made a strategic decision to privatize approximately 30,000 primary schools across the province as part of the Public Schools Reorganization Program. This move is aimed at achieving significant annual savings of up to 1500 billion rupees. To facilitate the transition, the government intends to offer a golden handshake to about 150,000 teachers currently employed in these primary schools. Criticism and Protest from Teachers:
The decision has sparked criticism from teachers organizations, leading to the formation of a joint action committee for protests and demonstrations. Teachers have begun teaching with black armbands as a sign of protest against the privatization move.
Ownership Opportunities for Youth:
In a bid to involve youth in education management, the government is offering ownership of these privatized schools to individuals under 40 years old. Applicants, in groups of three, must meet specific educational and experiential criteria, including having at least one member with a masters degree and three years of teaching experience.
