PED Raising Pass Percentage for Matric and Inter Exams

Education Department has suggested increasing the minimum passing marks for students of Matric grades 9 and 10 and Intermediate grades 11 and 12 from the current 33% to 40%. If the proposal receives approval, the updated requirement will be enforced starting from the 2026 annual examination session. Objective Behind the Policy Shift

The initiative aims to discourage rote learning and foster a more conceptual and analytical approach to education. By elevating academic expectations, the department intends to enhance the quality of student comprehension and educational outcomes across the province. The proposal will be reviewed and finalized in collaboration with the committee of chairpersons from all nine educational boards.

Transitional Plan and Existing Standards

For the upcoming 2025 examinations, students will still need to attain a minimum of 33% in each subjects theory and practical sections to pass. The revised 40% requirement will come into effect with the 2026 exams, giving institutions and students time to adjust to the new standards.

Introduction of New Grading Terminology and System

As part of the changes, the term “Fail” will be replaced by “Unsatisfactory” to encourage a more constructive academic outlook. Moreover, a modernized grading system will be launched alongside the new pass criteria, aiming to bring greater accuracy and fairness to the assessment process.

Implementation Across Punjab and Stakeholder Support

The revised policy will be applied consistently across all educational boards in Punjab, including those in Lahore Board, Multan Board, Faisalabad Board, Gujranwala Board, Rawalpindi Board, Sahiwal Board, Bahawalpur Board, Sargodha Board, and DG Khan Board. Various teacher associations have welcomed the proposed changes, viewing them as a progressive move to improve student performance and elevate academic s.
