Govt Cuts Higher Education Commission Budget for FY 2024-25

The federal government has significantly reduced the budget allocated to the Higher Education Commission HEC for the fiscal year 2024-25. Initially set at Rs. 65 billion, the budget has been slashed to Rs. 25 billion, marking a drastic cut of more than half. The students and others can get latest updates that Govt Slashes Higher Education Commission Budget for FY 2024-25.

Budget Allocation Changes

Under the revised allocation, funding from the Federal Higher Education Commission will now exclusively support federal universities. Public sector universities in the provinces will no longer receive financial assistance from the federal government. Instead, provinces are tasked with independently funding their universities.

Impact on Higher Education

The HEC had originally requested Rs. 126 billion to support over 160 public universities nationwide. However, the Planning Commission reduced the development budget allocated to the HEC from Rs. 59 billion to Rs. 21 billion. This reduction has raised concerns about its potential severe impact on universities across the country.

Response and Concerns

Dr. Mukhtar, Chairman of the HEC, has acknowledged receiving notifications from the Ministry of Finance regarding the reduced budget allocations. He expressed serious concerns about the implications for university operations and quality of education. Dr. Mukhtar intends to escalate the matter by writing letters to the finance minister and the prime minister, emphasizing that the HECs budget has seen a sharp decline from Rs. 65 billion in 2018 to the current Rs. 25 billion.
