UoK Introduces Semester System for Associate Degree Programs

University of Karachi has announced a transformative shift in its academic framework by transitioning the Associate Degree AD programs in Arts, Science, and Commerce—previously known as BA, B.Sc, and B.Com—offered at affiliated colleges to a semester-based system. This change will apply to both public and private colleges associated with the Karachi University. Semester Structure and Implementation

Under the proposed semester-based system, students will complete their syllabus in two halves, with exams conducted twice a year. Each semester will last six months, encompassing five months of teaching and one month for examinations. This restructuring aims to streamline learning and assessment, adhering to the guidelines set by the Higher Education Commission HEC.

Alignment with National HEC Policy

The decision aligns with HEC’s nationwide policy to replace the traditional two-year graduation system with a standardized Associate Degree AD framework. This approach ensures consistency in higher education across Pakistan. The semester-based structure, referred to as "Biannual" by the university, aims to modernize and enhance the learning process in affiliated colleges.

Proposal Review and Academic Council Decision

Professor Dr. Anila Amber Malik, Secretary of the University of Karachi’s Affiliation Committee, has submitted a detailed proposal for the semester transition. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Khalid Iraqi has included it as a key agenda item for the Academic Council meeting on December 3. If approved, the semester system will commence with new admissions to the AD programs at affiliated colleges.

Centralized Exam System for Flexibility

The semester-based evaluation will include 100-mark exams conducted every 5 to 7 months, managed by the University’s Examination Department. Traditionally, colleges assess 40% of the marks, with the university handling the remaining 60%. However, for the AD program, the university will centralize the entire assessment process to accommodate both regular students and private candidates, who can enroll without attending college.

Curriculum Structure and Competition

The curriculum for Commerce, Science, and Arts will be divided into four semesters, ensuring comprehensive and structured teaching at affiliated colleges. With private universities already adopting HEC’s semester-based policy, this shift is crucial for public universities like Karachi University to maintain competitiveness and adapt to modern educational standards.

A Pioneering Move in Public Sector Universities

While most public sector universities in Pakistan have continued with annual examination systems for AD programs, Karachi University is set to become a trailblazer by implementing the semester system. This move underscores its commitment to academic innovation and alignment with international education practices.
