UoK Announces Rs 5.9 Million in Student Scholarships
A private institution has pledged scholarships totaling Rs. 5.9 million for students at the University of Karachi. These scholarships will benefit students across five different departments, following an agreement signed between the university and the sponsoring organization. Vice Chancellor Highlights Challenges in Higher Education
During the signing ceremony, Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Iraqi spoke about the difficulties confronting higher education in Pakistan. He emphasized that only around two percent of students nationwide have access to tertiary education, primarily due to financial constraints.
Economic Barriers Impact Access to Education
Dr. Iraqi noted that slow industrial growth and limited government funding have worsened the education crisis. Many families struggle to pay for their children’s education because of high unemployment and economic hardship, he added.
Call for Government and Private Sector Support
The Vice Chancellor urged both public and private sectors to take active roles in supporting higher education initiatives.
Karachi University’s Continued Commitment to Students
Dr. Iraqi also highlighted that Karachi University has established department-specific scholarships supported by alumni contributions and operates the country’s only dedicated Student Admission Fund. Last year, Rs. 10 million from this fund was allocated to assist academically qualified students who cannot afford tuition fees.
