UHS Introduces Four New PhD Curricula and Stricter Standards
The University of Health Sciences UHS Lahore has embarked on a significant mission to modernize postgraduate medical education in Pakistan. In a landmark decision during the 227th meeting of the Advanced Studies and Research Board ASRB, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, the university officially approved four innovative, competency-based UHS Lahore PhD research programs. These initiatives reflect the university’s commitment to aligning Pakistan’s academic standards with global healthcare demands, focusing on both high-level research and practical clinical application.
New Doctoral Pathways for Specialized Healthcare
To address emerging challenges in the medical field, UHS has launched specialized PhD curricula in four vital disciplines:
Medical Education: Focusing on modern pedagogical methods and academic leadership.
Nursing: Built on the NURTURE Framework, this program emphasizes clinical leadership, professional ethics, and policy, including intensive clinical and teaching residencies.
Public Health: Designed to integrate artificial intelligence, implementation science, and community-based research into disease prevention and health systems strengthening.
Oral Biology: Aimed at bolstering research in regenerative dentistry, stem cell technology, and biomaterials.
Additionally, the university endorsed a revised Master of Health Professions Education MHPE curriculum and a new Certificate in Comprehensive Family Medicine Practice and Emergency Care CCFP-EC, ensuring a comprehensive upgrade to its postgraduate portfolio.

In addition to new programs, UHS has implemented UHS stricter PhD eligibility criteria to ensure the quality and impact of doctoral research. Candidates are now required to participate in at least three national and one international conference or seminar prior to their degree award. By fostering this culture of scholarly engagement, UHS aims to produce highly skilled researchers who are not only theoretically sound but also globally connected. These reforms represent a strategic investment in the future of the Pakistan healthcare sector, ensuring that graduates are prepared to lead with innovation and evidence-based expertise.
