Students Still Waiting for Free Books in Sindh

Two weeks into the new academic year, thousands of government school students in Sindh are still without their promised free textbooks. The academic year began on August 15, but due to administrative delays and heavy rains, the Sindh government has failed to deliver on its commitment, leaving students and their families in a difficult situation.

The Sindh government’s slogan, “Parhay Ga Sindh tau Barhay Ga Sindh,” feels increasingly hollow for many impoverished families who rely on government schools to educate their children. These families often enroll their children in government schools to save on education costs, but the unfulfilled promise of free textbooks has left them struggling. Despite assurances during admission that students would receive free textbooks and copies, these essential learning materials have yet to be delivered.

For many low-income families, the delay in receiving free textbooks is not just an inconvenience—it’s a financial burden. Every year, parents are promised that textbooks will be provided, but they often find themselves purchasing them from the open market at high prices to avoid disrupting their children’s education. The irony is that while free textbooks are unavailable in public schools, they are being sold openly in the market.

According to concerned parents, the Directorate of Education has informed them that the textbooks have not yet been printed by the Sindh Textbook Board, causing the delay. This has only added to the frustration of parents who feel let down by the system.

The ongoing situation highlights the challenges faced by low-income families in ensuring their children’s education. The Sindh government must urgently address this issue to fulfill its promise of providing free textbooks and ensure that the education of these students is not further compromised.
