Punjab to Finalize School Holidays and Academic Calendar Following LHC Orders
The Punjab School Education Department held a high-level meeting at the Civil Secretariat in Lahore to discuss the creation of a uniform academic calendar and holiday schedule for public and private schools across the province. This meeting was arranged in response to the directive of Justice Jawad Hassan of the Lahore High Court’s LHC Rawalpindi Bench. While hearing a petition filed by student Danial Hassan regarding the extension of summer vacations, the court on August 27 instructed the department to develop formal rules for declaring school holidays and to design a comprehensive annual academic framework.
The session was attended by senior officials, including the secretaries of school education, special education, and law and parliamentary affairs, along with the Advocate General Punjab. Also present were Advocate Hafiz Wawar Ahmed, counsel for the petitioner; Mian Imran Masood, president of the Pakistan Education Council; Abrar Ahmed Khan, president of the All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association APSMA North; Nighat Ali, executive director of Lahore Grammar School; Ali Raza, group director of Beaconhouse; Dr. Mariam Chughtai, director of the National Curriculum Council of Pakistan; Umer Salamat, representative of SICAS; and four representatives from other private school systems.
According to APSMA North President Abrar Ahmed, the participants will submit written proposals, after which the final draft of rules will be prepared through detailed discussions.
The court issued these instructions after the Education Department failed to provide a valid explanation for extending the summer holidays until August 31, leading to judicial intervention for a structured and consistent academic policy.
