Punjab Govt Revises Practical Exam Marking System for Board Students

The provincial government of Punjab has introduced significant reforms in the method used to assess practical examinations conducted by educational boards. According to the updated policy, teachers and examiners present at examination centers will no longer have the authority to award full marks to students in practical exams as they did previously. This step has been taken to improve transparency and ensure a fair evaluation system for students appearing in board examinations across the province. New Policy Limits Authority of Practical Examiners and Introduces Centralized Marking
Under the revised regulations, the written component of practical examinations will now be evaluated through a centralized checking process managed by the respective boards of intermediate and secondary education operating in Punjab. The new rules will be implemented in all education boards of the province so that a uniform marking standard can be maintained.
Officials involved in the decision explained that the earlier system sometimes allowed personal recommendations or preferential treatment to affect the results of practical examinations. In some cases, students were able to obtain full marks without undergoing a strict evaluation of their practical work. The government believes that the introduction of centralized checking will reduce such possibilities and make the examination process more merit-based.
According to the new marking structure, the total 30 marks assigned to practical examinations will now be separated into two distinct portions. One portion will consist of a written section in which students will record their observations, procedures, or results related to the experiment. These written answer sheets will be sent to the respective boards for checking, ensuring that the assessment is conducted under standardized conditions by designated examiners.
Meanwhile, the examiners who supervise practical examinations at the centers will only be responsible for awarding a limited number of marks. These marks will be based on the student’s performance during the viva voce and the execution of the practical activity in the laboratory. However, their authority to grant marks will remain restricted compared with the previous system, as the majority of the evaluation will now be carried out through the centralized board checking process.
The revised policy will be implemented in practical examinations of key science and technical subjects. These subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Studies, where practical assessments form an important part of the overall examination structure. By reforming the marking process in these subjects, authorities aim to ensure that students receive marks that accurately reflect their understanding and performance.
Chairman of the Task Force Committee for Boards, Muzammil Mahmood, commented on the reform and stated that the era of purely formal or symbolic practical examinations is coming to an end. He emphasized that practical assessments should genuinely test the abilities of students rather than simply serving as a routine requirement. According to him, the updated system will ensure that students earn their marks based strictly on merit and actual performance.
Education authorities believe that these reforms will enhance the credibility of board examinations and strengthen confidence in the academic evaluation process throughout the province. By limiting the discretion of center-based examiners and introducing centralized checking, the government aims to create a more transparent and standardized system for practical exam assessment. Ultimately, the initiative is expected to promote fairness and encourage students to focus more seriously on developing their practical knowledge and laboratory skills.
