Private Medical Colleges Request PMDC to Reduce MDCAT Passing Marks

The administration of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University SMBBMU, Larkana, has formally requested the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC to reconsider the eligibility criteria for MBBS and BDS admissions for the 2025–26 academic year. The move comes as many seats in private medical institutions remain unfilled due to candidates failing to meet the current requirements. Proposal to Relax Admission Criteria Amid Rising Seat Shortages

Officials revealed that the university’s registrar sent a letter to the PMDC last month, highlighting that approximately 350 MBBS seats are still vacant despite repeated admission rounds. Several private medical and dental colleges have also raised concerns, stating that the shortage of eligible applicants has prevented them from filling available positions.

The registrar reminded the council that a similar issue occurred in the previous academic session, which was addressed by lowering the passing marks for MBBS and BDS admissions by five percentage points. That adjustment helped improve enrollment and reduced seat wastage. Currently, the PMDC mandates a minimum of 55% marks for MBBS and 50% for BDS programs.

In light of this year’s smaller pool of qualifying candidates and the growing number of unfilled seats, SMBBMU has recommended a larger relaxation. The university suggested lowering the minimum marks to 45% for MBBS and 40% for BDS. Officials stated that this adjustment would enable better utilization of available seats, maintain smooth academic operations, and safeguard the interests of both students and institutions, while still upholding acceptable academic standards.

The letter also linked the proposal to the broader healthcare needs of Sindh, warning that leaving seats vacant could impact the supply of future medical professionals in the province. Copies of the communication were shared with key stakeholders, including the Sindh health secretary, the vice chancellor of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences LUMHS, Jamshoro, and the chairperson of the provincial Supervising and Steering Committee.

When contacted, SMBBMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nusrat Shah confirmed that the request had been sent to the PMDC, adding that the council has not yet issued a response.
