PMDC Relaxes Admission Criteria for Medical Programs
In a new development set to impact aspiring medical students across Pakistan, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC has eased the admission criteria for MBBS and BDS programs in private institutions. The policy change, announced on Wednesday via media, is designed to fill vacant seats that have increasingly plagued private medical and dental colleges.
Students securing a minimum of 50% marks in their intermediate exams can now apply for MBBS programs, while those with 45% marks are eligible for BDS. In exceptional cases, students with even lower grades may also be admitted if seats remain unfilled.
This one-time concession is exclusive to private colleges and is seen as a pragmatic response to the admission shortfall in the private medical education sector.
Experts believe the move will open doors for a wider segment of students while also keeping private institutions financially viable. However, it has also sparked discussions on maintaining academic standards in professional education.
