PMDC Halts Unrecognized Programs at 10 Varsities
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC has issued a critical alert regarding unrecognized postgraduate programs being offered by ten prominent universities. Medical professionals have been warned that qualifications from these specific courses will not be registered, potentially jeopardizing their professional careers.
Regulatory Crackdown on Medical Education
Under the PMDC Act 2022, all postgraduate medical and dental diplomas and degrees must receive formal accreditation before enrollment begins. The Council identified that several institutions have been awarding degrees without fulfilling these mandatory legal requirements.
List of Non-Compliant Universities
The PMDC notification specifically named the following institutions for offering unauthorized medical programs:
- TIMES University, Multan
- NUR International University, Lahore
- Gomal University, D.I. Khan
- Sohail University, Karachi
- Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur
- University of Faisalabad
- Hazara University, Mansehra
- Kohat University of Science and Technology
- University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir
- Khwaja Fareed University of Engineering & IT, Rahim Yar Khan
Impact on Enrolled Medical Trainees
The Council’s decision has immediate and severe implications for MBBS and BDS doctors currently pursuing specialized training at these sites.
- Registration Refusal: The PMDC will not recognize or register these postgraduate qualifications.
- Halt Orders: Universities have been directed to stop all advertising and recruitment for these programs immediately.
- Legal Prohibitions: Section 34 of the Act bars any institution from operating training programs without prior formal recognition.
Advice for Medical Students
Prospective residents are urged to verify the PMDC recognition status of any postgraduate specialty before applying. Choosing an unaccredited medical program can lead to significant financial loss and a permanent barrier to practicing as a specialist in Pakistan.
