Pakistan’s Performance in QS World University Rankings 2027

Pakistan’s Performance in QS World University Rankings 2027

The latest QS World University Rankings 2027have highlighted ongoing challenges for the Pakistani higher education sector, as the country’s leading institutions have fallen outside the coveted global top 350. This annual assessment, which serves as a critical for academic reputation, research impact, and employer reputation, reveals a slight regression for the nation’s top-tier universities. Despite this shift, the inclusion of 18 Pakistani institutions in the list of 1,504 globally ranked universities underscores a persistent, albeit evolving, presence in the international academic landscape.

Shifts in Institutional Rankings

In the latest edition, Quaid-i-Azam University QAU—consistently Pakistan’s highest-ranked institution—slipped from 354th to 381st place globally. Similarly, the National University of Sciences and Technology NUST experienced a shift, moving from 371st to 384th position. While these flagship universities recorded declines, the rankings also brought positive news for several other institutions. The Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences PIEASsaw a significant improvement, jumping to 560th place, while COMSATS University Islamabad and the University of Agriculture Faisalabad also demonstrated upward momentum in their global performance metrics.

Strengthening Higher Education Competitiveness

Education experts note that while some institutions have achieved progress through improved research output and faculty citations, broader systemic issues continue to hinder consistent top-tier placement. Addressing gaps in research funding, enhancing international academic collaborations, and upgrading faculty development programs are widely seen as essential steps to improve Pakistan’s international standing. As global competition intensifies, the performance of these 18 ranked universities serves as a diagnostic tool for policymakers to refine their approach to higher education quality and digital transformation. Strengthening these areas remains vital for Pakistani universities to bolster their competitiveness and improve their future trajectories in the global rankings.
