Over 16,000 KU Students Default on Tuition Fees Amid Financial Strain

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Pakistan has faced considerable economic challenges, which have significantly impacted students, including those at the University of Karachi KU. Over the past four years, more than 16,500 students enrolled in both morning and evening programs at KU have struggled to pay their tuition fees. The financial burden has caused widespread defaults, with a total of Rs 2.1 billion in unpaid fees accumulated from 2020 to 2024. The students can get detailed updates of Over 16,000 KU Students Default on Tuition Fees Amid Financial Strain.

KU Takes Tough Stand on Fee Defaulters

During a recent meeting held on Wednesday, chaired by Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, KU officials discussed the growing issue of unpaid dues. The administration expressed concern over the substantial outstanding fees, which have created a pressing financial issue for the university. In response, the administration decided to take strict measures against defaulting students, including barring them from exams and denying them admit cards. Additionally, there was a proposal to cancel the enrollment and deprive degrees of students who had already graduated but failed to clear their dues.

Controversy Surrounding the Decision

The administration’s decision has sparked criticism, particularly regarding the treatment of students who have struggled financially. According to an official statement, the students were given ample time and opportunities to pay their fees, but they failed to do so. As a result, only students in the evening program who have paid their dues will be issued admit cards and allowed to take their exams.

However, some faculty members have criticized this approach. A senior staff member, speaking anonymously, argued that the fee increases over the last four years have made tuition unaffordable for many students. Many of the students flagged as defaulters had, in fact, ped out due to financial constraints, leaving them unable to pay the raised fees.

Call for Government Support to Address the Crisis

In light of the financial strain on students, the faculty member also suggested that KU seek financial assistance from the Sindh government through a potential bailout package. This could help ease the burden on struggling students and provide much-needed relief, rather than penalizing them further.
