Over 10000 Schools in KP is Without Basic Facilities

A newly released report by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Department has revealed that more than 10000 public schools across 28 districts in the province are deprived of essential infrastructure. These schools, which serve a large number of students, are functioning without key facilities such as clean drinking water, electricity, toilets, and boundary walls, raising serious concerns about the state of education. The students can get latest updates of Alarming Shortage of Basic Facilities in Over 10,000 KP Government Schools.

Key Infrastructure Deficiencies Identified

The report outlines critical shortages: over 5,000 schools are without electricity, more than 2,000 lack clean drinking water, and thousands still operate without proper washroom facilities or secure perimeters. These deficiencies illustrate the deep-rooted infrastructural problems that plague KP’s public education system.

Primary and Middle Schools Facing Harsh Realities

In primary schools, electricity is missing in 2,211 institutions, with Mansehra 344 schools and Upper Kohistan 252 schools being the worst-affected districts. Upper Kohistan also leads in water and sanitation issues, with 208 schools lacking drinking water and 1,253 missing operational washrooms. Among 160 middle schools assessed, 136 have no boundary walls, 71 lack clean water, and 57 do not have adequate sanitation. Even Peshawar, the provincial capital, reflects this crisis with dozens of schools missing essential facilities.

Government’s Response and Future Plans

Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, KP’s provincial advisor on information, acknowledged the problem and affirmed the government’s commitment to resolving it. He highlighted that Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has prioritized the issue, with directives issued for improvement. Additional funding is expected in the upcoming budget for clean water and sanitation in all public schools. Authorities are also contemplating the declaration of an “education emergency” in areas where school absenteeism exceeds 50%.

Widening Educational Crisis Across the Province

The broader educational picture remains grim, as previous reports indicate that nearly 37% of KP’s children are not enrolled in school. A staggering 4.92 million children, both boys and girls, are out of formal education. Kolai-Palas Kohistan is the most affected area with 80,333 children out of school, followed by Lower and Upper Kohistan, where out rates approach 79%. In contrast, Upper Chitral shows relatively positive progress with only 10% of children not enrolled. Peshawar faces its own crisis, with over half a million out-of-school children, including 319,000 girls—emphasizing a significant gender gap in access to education.
