No Summer Holidays for Medical Students

No Summer Holidays for Medical Students

Medical and dental students in Pakistan will not receive a traditional summer vacation this year, even as the country experiences a severe heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 45°C 113°F in cities such as Lahore, Karachi, and Multan. The academic calendar for the 2024-2025 session was delayed due to extended admission procedures and administrative setbacks, resulting in classes only starting in April. This late start has forced a condensed schedule, leaving little time for breaks. Most students will receive only a brief seven-day holiday in July—if any at all. Some institutions have announced that there will be no summer vacation at all this year.

Compressed Academic Schedule and Extreme Heat Strain Medical Students

Second and third-year students are facing the brunt of this schedule, as they are also adapting to new MBBS curriculum changes introduced this year. Many students say the intense workload, paired with the absence of rest, is negatively affecting their physical and mental well-being. “We’re expected to stay on top of our studies, but this pace is exhausting us,” said a third-year student from King Edward Medical University, requesting anonymity.

To make matters worse, students living in hostels report that air conditioning is either not available or frequently breaks down. With the relentless heat, hostel rooms have become unbearable. “We’re training to be health professionals, yet forced to live in conditions that endanger our own health,” said a second-year dental student from Karachi. Some students have taken to ing in hallways or libraries to escape the heat.

This situation has sparked frustration, as students note that only medical and dental students are being denied summer holidays, unlike those in other academic fields. Student groups are urging university officials and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC to revise the academic calendar and place greater emphasis on student health and well-being.
