GCU Lahore Grants Full Tuition Waivers for Disable Students

Government College University GCU Lahore has announced a significant initiative to support students with physical disabilities by granting full tuition fee waivers. This progressive decision was made during the university’s 72nd Syndicate meeting, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry. Alongside this welfare measure, the Syndicate approved multiple academic and administrative initiatives aimed at enhancing education, research, and student support. New Academic Programs and Degrees

The Syndicate has approved the launch of several new programs to expand the university’s academic offerings. These include three new PhD programs, six MS/MPhil programs, and five BS degrees, such as BS Computational Statistics and BS Criminology. Additional new programs include:

BS and PhD in Molecular Biology
PhD in Accounting and Finance
MPhil in Genetics
MS in English Linguistics
MS and PhD in Pharmacology
MS in Artificial Intelligence
BS in Library and Information Sciences
MPhil in Peace and Conflict Studies
BS in Public Administration

These initiatives aim to provide students with modern, industry-relevant education while promoting advanced research opportunities.

Enhanced University Budget and Support

The university also approved a budget of Rs. 3.25 billion for 2025–26, designed to strengthen support for both students and staff. The session saw participation from notable attendees, including Punjab Assembly members Salma Butt and Sultan Bajwa, representatives from the Higher Education Commission, and officials from various provincial departments.

Industry Collaboration and International Student Opportunities

To strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, the Syndicate approved the inclusion of co-opted members from the corporate sector in the Boards of Studies of all departments. Additionally, the number of seats for students from OIC member countries will be increased. New diploma and certificate programs will be offered in fields such as income tax law, banking law, forensic law, and criminology, along with short summer workshops in arts, languages, debate, and theatre.

Faculty and Staff Welfare Measures

GCU Lahore has introduced multiple welfare measures for faculty and staff. These include:

A new health insurance policy

Clearance of pending TTS faculty increments

Increased remuneration, including summer semester pay raised from Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 50,000

Enhanced compensation for visiting faculty and administrative staff scales 1–16 for extra hours and weekends

Increased breakfast allowance

Additional benefits include reduced PhD fees for university employees, lower charges for overseas students and the daycare center, and a new policy to allow external access to sports facilities, including the gym and swimming pool.

The meeting concluded with the participation of senior university officials, including Prof. Dr. Babar Aziz, Dean of Arts and Social Sciences, and Dr. Shaukat Ali, Registrar of GCU Lahore. The session marked a significant step toward improving academic programs, student welfare, and faculty support, positioning GCU Lahore as a leading institution in higher education and inclusive learning.
