Chinese Envoy Announces Rs1 Million Scholarships for GCWUS Students




ISLAMABAD: China’s Consul General, Zhao Shiren, has announced scholarships worth Rs1 million for students of Government College Women University Sialkot GCWUS. He also emphasized the need to further enhance educational and cultural collaboration between China and Pakistan to strengthen people-to-people connections. China and Pakistan Strengthen Educational and Cultural Ties

The announcement came during Zhao Shiren’s visit to GCWUS on the invitation of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir. The Chinese diplomat reaffirmed his country’s ongoing commitment to supporting academic initiatives and youth development through long-term partnerships.

According to a report by Gwadar Pro, the visit also included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding MoU between the Consulate General of China and GCWUS. This agreement aims to promote joint efforts in education, research, cultural exchange, and student development programs.

The university organized a colorful event to celebrate Pak–China friendship, arranged by the Department of Fine Arts and the Directorate of Student Affairs. The celebration featured an art exhibition and a Chinese cultural performance highlighting the shared values and friendship between the two nations.

During his address, Consul General Zhao praised the talent and creativity of GCWUS students, noting that their artistic work reflected the enduring bond and mutual respect between Pakistan and China. The event also included a poetic tribute to Allama Iqbal and a dramatic presentation symbolizing the strength of China–Pakistan relations.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Shazia Bashir warmly welcomed the Chinese diplomat and described Sialkot as the “City of Iqbal,” emphasizing its cultural and intellectual significance. She highlighted that increased cooperation in education and research would help both countries prepare their youth to face global challenges effectively.

Dr. Bashir also suggested establishing a Chinese Language Centre and a Confucius Institute at GCWUS to enhance linguistic and cultural understanding.

In his remarks, Zhao Shiren expressed gratitude for the university’s hospitality and commended its dedication to academic excellence. He assured continued Chinese support for more scholarships, research collaborations, and joint educational initiatives in the future.

The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Shagufta Firdous, Director of Student Affairs, and Raza Rahman, Chairperson of the Fine Arts Department, for successfully organizing the Pak–China Friendship event.
