35 Pakistani Universities Feature in QS Subject Rankings 2026

Pakistan has marked a significant presence on the global academic map with 35 of its institutions featuring in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. The results highlight a dominant performance by public-sector universities, while specialized private institutions like LUMS and Aga Khan University AKU maintain their niche leadership.

Public vs Private Sector Performance

Out of the 35 ranked institutions, 31 belong to the public sector, underscoring the governments role in driving research output and academic visibility. The National University of Sciences and Technology NUST emerged as a powerhouse in Engineering & Technology, while Quaid-i-Azam University QAU maintained a strong position in Natural Sciences.

Pakistan’s Top Performers by Discipline

  • Engineering & Technology: NUST 201–250 band and UET Lahore.
  • Business & Management: LUMS 101–150 band and IBA Karachi.
  • Medicine: Aga Khan University 201–250 global bracket.
  • Agriculture & Forestry: University of Agriculture Faisalabad Top 200 globally.

The Rise of Research and Global Engagement

The QS Subject Rankings 2026 indicate that Pakistani universities are becoming increasingly competitive in specialized fields. However, experts suggest that while research citations are high for many public varsities, there is a need for more investment in international research networks and global branding to break into the top 100.

Future Outlook for Students

This year’s rankings offer a comprehensive guide for students exploring university admissions and career paths. Whether it is computer science at COMSATS or social sciences at Punjab University, the growing number of subject entries—totaling nearly 180—shows that the quality of education in Pakistan is on a steady upward trajectory.
