Launched in July of the previous year, the programme is designed to send 1,000 Pakistani students to China for specialised training in modern farming practices, with full government sponsorship. Pakistan-China Collaboration Aims to Boost Agricultural Innovation and Sector Growth

In a statement shared on X formerly Twitter, Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the progress, highlighting that participants received advanced instruction in:

  • Efficient irrigation methods
  • Seed and crop technology
  • Livestock management
  • Agricultural productivity enhancement
  • Techniques to reduce post-harvest losses

The Prime Minister thanked the Chinese government, Shaanxi provincial authorities, and key educational partners—North West Agriculture and Forestry University and Yangling Vocational and Technical College—for their collaboration. He also commended the contributions of Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security, the Higher Education Commission HEC, and the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing.

The Chinese Embassy also congratulated the graduates on X, expressing confidence that the trained students would play a valuable role in advancing Pakistan’s agriculture and strengthening bilateral ties.

While the training initiative reflects a forward-looking strategy, the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024–25 reveals a challenging reality: the agricultural sector, which contributes around 25% of the national GDP, recorded only 0.6% growth—well below the 2% target and drastically lower than the initial 6.4% projection. Key crops such as wheat, cotton, and maize saw a significant decline of 13.5%, surpassing the anticipated 4.5% .

Despite the setbacks, Prime Minister reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernising agriculture, viewing it as a cornerstone for sustainable economic development in Pakistan.
