Punjab Plans AI Labs in Primary Schools to Build Future Digital Skills
Punjab is preparing to modernize its education system by introducing Artificial Intelligence AI education in primary schools. The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board has approved a proposal to incorporate AI into the curriculum for students up to Grade 5, marking a significant step toward equipping young learners with future-oriented knowledge. The initiative aims to strengthen digital education, critical thinking, and technological awareness from an early stage, helping students adapt to the rapidly evolving digital world.
AI Laboratories to Provide Practical Learning Opportunities
A major feature of the initiative is the establishment of AI laboratories in government primary schools in Punjab, allowing students to gain practical experience alongside classroom instruction. The project will be implemented in phases, beginning with the introduction of AI as a dedicated subject, followed by the development of modern science and AI labs. To support quality instruction, the government also plans to recruit qualified education professionals with expertise in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
Flexible Strategy to Ensure Successful Implementation
Officials have also prepared an alternative implementation plan to address possible financial constraints. If funding delays occur, fundamental AI concepts will be integrated into existing science textbooks so that students can begin learning the basics without waiting for full laboratory infrastructure. The proposed curriculum is expected to receive final approval at the upcoming board meeting, while province-wide implementation is scheduled for the 2027 academic year.
