UHS Launches Pakistan First Medical Journalism Program

UHS Launches Pakistan First Medical Journalism Program

Lahore – August 2025 — In a landmark step toward strengthening academic publishing and healthcare reforms, the University of Health Sciences UHS hosted a high-level event titled “Strengthening Editorial Collaborations” at its City Campus. The event brought together top editors, medical academics, and healthcare faculty from across Punjab to discuss the future of medical journalism and scientific publishing in Pakistan.

The initiative aligns with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, focusing on structural healthcare reforms and educational innovation. According to Punjabs Health Minister, new hospitals are being constructed across the province, and educational standards in the medical sector are being elevated through systematic editorial training and journal development.

UHS Pro-Vice Chancellor Emphasizes Editorial Capacity Building

In her keynote speech, Professor Nadia Naseem, Pro-Vice Chancellor of UHS and Editor-in-Chief of BioMedica, shared the impact of UHS’s editorial training programs. She revealed that over 225 editors have already been trained, and 30 medical colleges in Punjab now run their own peer-reviewed academic journals. A dedicated Journal Office at UHS now supports both faculty and students in journal development and editorial best practices.

“Our goal is to make UHS a regional hub for academic publishing and research excellence,” Prof. Naseem stated. “We are not only raising publishing standards but nurturing future editors and researchers.”

Vice Chancellor Highlights Global Aspirations

UHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore officially inaugurated the new editorial training department, tracing the university’s progress since 2019. What began as a certificate in medical editing has now grown into a WHO-EMAME accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Editing 2024.

“We’re leading Pakistan’s entry into globally recognized academic publishing,” Prof. Rathore said, adding that these reforms represent a strategic step toward international recognition and knowledge leadership.

Medical Leaders Praise Initiative, Urge Global Visibility

The event also featured remarks from prominent leaders in the medical and academic community:

  • Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal, VC of Fatima Jinnah Medical University, lauded the initiative but stressed that research integrity and editorial quality must remain uncompromised.

  • Prof. Dr. Javed Akram, President of the Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine PSIM, and former provincial minister of health, highlighted Pakistan’s limited presence in global medical publishing.

“With our scientific potential and population, we should be producing significantly more high-impact journals,” he said, urging the government to include research writing in undergraduate medical education.

Pakistan’s Medical Publishing Industry Needs Support

Veteran journalist Shaukat Ali Jawaid, Chief Editor of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences, offered a comprehensive overview of Pakistan’s academic publishing landscape, calling for long-term support and formal editorial development programs.

“Consistent institutional support, mentorship, and training are key to building editorial excellence across medical colleges,” he emphasized.

Final Thoughts: Academic and Healthcare Synergy

This editorial initiative is part of a broader reform strategy under CM Maryam Nawazs leadership, including not just hospital infrastructure but also academic excellence in healthcare. UHS is positioning itself as the heartbeat of medical research, publishing, and editorial training in Pakistan, paving the way for globally competitive healthcare professionals.
