UAE Introduces Tighter Student Attendance Regulations for 2025 2026

Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge ADEK has introduced a stricter attendance framework for the 2025–26 school year, emphasizing parental responsibility in ensuring regular student attendance. These new rules, outlined in the Student Administrative Affairs Policy, clearly define acceptable absence limits and apply to all schools across the emirate. Attendances
  • Kindergarten: More than 10% of missed school days 18 days will raise concern.
  • Grades 1–12: More than 5% of absences 9 days will be considered problematic.

Both excused and unexcused absences are counted within these limits.

Definition of Attendance and Absence

Attendance requires students to be physically present on school days listed in the academic calendar. Absence is measured as a percentage of missed days, with mid-year enrollees assessed from their joining date.

Approved Reasons for Absence

Valid absences may include:

  • Illness
  • Urgent medical appointments
  • Bereavement of close family members first or second degree
  • Participation in official events, competitions, or duties
  • Public holidays or closures declared by the government
  • ADEK-approved study or exam leave

Medical Absence Guidelines

  • Parents may provide their own sick notes for up to 3 consecutive days, with a yearly limit of 12 days.
  • From the 4th day, a Department of Health DOH medical certificate is required.
  • Chronic conditions exceeding 12 days require an official DOH medical report.

Parental Duties

Parents are required to:

  • Notify the school of absences.
  • Submit supporting documents such as medical notes or official letters.
  • Ensure their child completes all missed schoolwork and assessments.
  • Understand that undocumented absences will be classified as unexcused.

Unacceptable Absence Reasons

The following will not be recognized:

  • Family holidays during term time
  • Staying at home without notice
  • Non-urgent medical visits
  • Missing school due to minor weather changes

Punctuality Also Monitored

Repeated lateness is tracked by schools and may result in disciplinary action if it becomes frequent.
ADEK highlights that “consistent attendance and punctuality are essential for academic success, building responsibility, and ensuring students reach their full potential.”
