Tokyo University Launches Fully Automated Research Laboratory

Tokyo University Launches Fully Automated Research Laboratory

A university in Tokyo has introduced an advanced research laboratory where robots are performing scientific and medical experiments that were previously handled by human researchers. The new facility, established at the Yushima campus of Institute of Science Tokyo, has been named the Robotics Innovation Center and currently operates without any human laboratory staff. The students can get the latest information of Tokyo University Launches Fully Automated Research Laboratory.

Robots and Artificial Intelligence Take Over Scientific Experiments

The laboratory contains 10 robotic systems, including a humanoid robot known as Maholo LabDroid. These robots are designed to carry out detailed and sensitive laboratory tasks with high accuracy. Using robotic arms, they can measure and transfer chemical substances, open specialized temperature-controlled equipment, and place or remove research materials. Certain procedures, such as cell cultivation, have already been fully automated through programming.

The university aims to greatly expand this robotic system in the future. By the year 2040, it hopes to increase the number of robots to nearly 2,000 and automate almost every stage of scientific research. This includes everything from developing research ideas to conducting experiments and confirming results. The institution also plans to combine robotics with artificial intelligence technology to improve research efficiency and innovation.

During the opening ceremony held in April, the head of the center, Keiichi Nakayama, explained that robotics and AI would play a major role in strengthening Japan’s scientific progress and helping the country become a global leader in research. Robots even participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the launch of the facility.

The project comes at a time when research organizations are facing difficulties such as shortages of skilled workers and the risk of human error during laboratory experiments. Automated systems are expected to improve accuracy, reduce workload, and speed up scientific development.

The Maholo robot has already been used in a hospital in Kobe that specializes in eye treatment and medical research. There, it assists with stem cell-related clinical studies and performs laboratory duties such as cell culture work. Experts who previously worked with the robot in Kobe have now joined the Robotics Innovation Center to support the development of this fully automated laboratory system.
