Thousands of Schools Shut Down in Punjab Due to Floods
The Punjab School Education Department has announced that nearly 2,925 public schools have been forced to close as a result of devastating floods. Secretary of School Education, Khalid Nazir Wattoo, stated that out of these, 1,151 institutions have suffered structural damage, with 817 partially affected and 45 completely destroyed. In addition, more than 1,700 schools are being used as temporary flood relief shelters, leaving normal classes suspended. Education Severely Disrupted Across the Province
Both boys’ and girls’ schools are among those affected, with 1,505 girls’ schools and 1,420 boys’ schools currently shut down. This large-scale closure has disrupted the learning of over 680,000 students, especially in the districts of Gujrat, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Multan, where most schools remain out of operation.
Wattoo further explained that converting schools into relief camps has added to the interruption of academic activities, intensifying the challenges faced by both teachers and students in these flood-hit areas.
