Sindh Introduces Religious Textbooks for Hindu Students

The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has achieved a significant milestone in educational reform by officially introducing dedicated religious textbooks for Hindu students. This initiative, designed for Grades 3 to 5 in government schools in Sindh across the province, marks a progressive shift toward fostering an environment of inclusive education and religious harmony. By implementing this curriculum, the provincial government is taking concrete steps to fulfill the constitutional right of students to receive religious instruction in accordance with their own faith, replacing the previous practice where minority students were often assigned general Ethics courses instead.

Upholding Minority Rights and Cultural Diversity

This policy, launched under the leadership of Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah, reflects a steadfast commitment to safeguarding minority rights in Pakistan. By providing over 129,000 Hindu students with access to faith-specific educational materials, the government is acknowledging the rich religious and cultural diversity of the region. The curriculum has been developed in close consultation with the Hindu community, scholars, and relevant organizations to ensure that the content is both authentic and respectful. This move is widely recognized as a long-awaited realization of the principles of tolerance and pluralism, ensuring that no student is deprived of their fundamental right to learn about their own religious heritage.

Implementation and Future Outlook

The rollout of these religious textbooks is currently underway for the 2026–27 academic year, with the Sindh Textbook Board managing the distribution process. While the first phase focuses on primary-level students, particularly in districts with high enrollment such as Tharparkar and Umerkot, the initiative sets a precedent for broader institutional reform. By prioritizing educational equity and actively addressing the gaps in minority-focused curriculum, the Sindh government aims to curb social intolerance and promote a more cohesive society. This historic effort serves as a vital step in ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, feels represented and valued within the national educational system.
