Sindh Approves Hindu Religious Books for Schools in 2026

Sindh Approves Hindu Religious Books for Schools in 2026

The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has issued a landmark official notification approving the publication of three specialized religious textbooks for Hindu students. This decision, finalized during a high-level meeting of the Sindh Curriculum Council on April 20, 2026, marks a historic shift in the provincial policy toward inclusive education for minority communities across public schools in Sindh.

For decades, Hindu students in government institutions were required to study Ethics as a substitute for religious education. This new notification changes that landscape entirely, granting students the right to learn about their own faith within the formal school system. By recognizing the specific needs of over 129,000 Hindu pupils, the government is taking a concrete step toward fostering social harmony and protecting the constitutional rights of all citizens.

Implementation Strategy for Academic Year 2026-27

According to the directives of Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah, the new curriculum will be introduced for Grades 3 to 5. The Sindh Textbook Board STBB has been formally instructed to oversee the distribution of these books for the upcoming 2026-27 session.

Due to current budgetary constraints at the STBB, the provincial government has partnered with a social welfare organization, Prem Sagar Sanstha Karachi, to fund the initial publication. However, the distribution will remain under the strict supervision of the board authority to ensure the books reach every corner of the province, from Karachi to the remote areas of Tharparkar.

Student Impact and Enrollment Statistics

The scale of this initiative is significant. Official data highlights that the most substantial impact will be seen in the following districts:
  • Tharparkar: 26,642 Hindu students
  • Umerkot: 21,584 Hindu students
  • Total Beneficiaries: Approximately 129,119 students province-wide

This policy update ensures that religious education is no longer an exclusionary process. The curriculum has been developed in consultation with subject experts and representatives from the Hindu community to ensure authenticity and educational quality.

Will these books be available for higher grades?
Currently, the policy covers Grades 3, 4, and 5. However, the Education Minister has hinted that this is the "first phase." Plans are reportedly in discussion to extend the religious curriculum to middle and matriculation levels in subsequent years.

Can private schools use these textbooks?
Yes, while the primary focus is on government schools, private institutions following the Sindh curriculum are encouraged to adopt these books to ensure their Hindu students have access to the same religious books and educational standards.
