Senate Urges PMDC to Lower MDCAT Marks and Fix Fees
The Senate Standing Committee on Health has raised serious concerns over the thousands of vacant seats in medical and dental colleges across Sindh and Punjab. Committee Chairman Aamir Waliuddin revealed that the current high weightage criteria set by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC is the primary hurdle preventing students from securing admissions.
High Merit Leaving Seats Vacant
Despite the high demand for medical education, seats remain unfilled because many candidates cannot meet the rigorous PMDC standards. To address this, the Chairman suggested a drastic shift: reducing the MDCAT passing marks to 33%.
Mustafa Kamal further recommended that the PMDC conduct a formal review of these passing requirements and submit a detailed report to ensure that the 22,000 students currently left out of the system each year have a fair shot at a career in medicine.
Demand for MDCAT Supplementary Exams
Senator Anusha Rahman highlighted the "unfortunate" reality for students who miss the cutoff by a single mark, losing an entire academic year. She has demanded the introduction of a supplementary MDCAT examination, providing a second chance for students to prove their eligibility without waiting another 12 months.
