Senate Panel Takes Firm Action Against MDCAT Exam Paper Leak
On September 22, 2024, the Senate Committee on Health Services Regulation took serious steps to address the widely reported leak of the MDCAT exam.
Initial Dismissal by Universities
According to officials from the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC, universities involved initially dismissed any wrongdoing regarding the paper leak. However, when affected students filed complaints with the Sindh High Court, the court took swift action by halting the results declared by Dow University of Health Sciences. A special investigation committee was also formed, comprising members from the Federal Investigation Agency FIA, two government secretaries, and a representative from PMDC.
FIA Forensic Report Unveils Leak
The FIAs forensic analysis confirmed that the MDCAT paper had been leaked a full 13 hours before the official exam time. This revelation raised alarms about the fairness of the MDCAT results. Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti expressed concern over how some students, who had barely passed their earlier exams, managed to score an almost perfect 197 out of 200 marks in MDCAT, suggesting clear evidence of cheating.
Future Reforms and Exam Security
Senator Chishti instructed the PMDC to provide a concrete strategy for improving future MDCAT exams by the end of December 2024. He recommended moving to IT-based exam systems to prevent future leaks and also proposed the creation of a publicly accessible Question Bank to tackle issues like out-of-syllabus questions. These changes aim to ensure that future MDCAT tests are fair, transparent, and secure.
