Lawmakers Express Concern Over Unregulated Increases in School Fees

During the meeting, members noted that several private institutions had ignored the guidelines set by the Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Authority PEIRA. According to PEIRA’s policy, schools can raise tuition fees by up to 5 percent per year, while top-performing institutions are allowed a maximum increase of 8 percent. However, the committee found that some elite schools had raised fees by as much as 12 percent, violating the 2021 directive.

Senator Bushra Anjum Butt criticized the unjustified increases and instructed schools charging Rs50,000 or more to revise their fee challans immediately. She also requested updated reports identifying schools that exceeded the approved limits.

PEIRA officials informed the committee that schools are prohibited from forcing parents to buy books or uniforms from specific vendors. They assured that any such violations would be dealt with under existing policies. The committee called for firm action against schools disregarding the official fee determination framework.
