SBBU Lyari to Introduce BS Nursing & DPT Programmes

SBBU Lyari to Introduce BS Nursing & DPT Programmes

Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University SBBU in Lyari has announced plans to launch two new professional degree programmes — Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Physical Therapy DPT — beginning in the 2026 academic session. This move marks a significant transition from conventional academic courses to more career-oriented studies. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hussain Mehdi confirmed that the university’s academic council has approved both programmes, and preparations are currently in progress. However, the launch remains subject to financial approval from the relevant authorities before admissions can begin. The students can get latest updates of SBBU Lyari to Introduce BS Nursing & DPT Programmes.

Temporary Suspension of Admissions in Select Disciplines
Prof Mehdi stated in an interview with The New Channel that admissions in departments such as International Relations, Media Sciences, and Sports Sciences have been paused temporarily. This decision follows concerns raised by the Sindh Higher Education Commission HEC over the absence of permanent teaching staff in these departments. The university has formally requested the Sindh Chief Minister to authorize the hiring of qualified faculty. Once approval is granted and recruitment is carried out, the university plans to resume admissions in these programmes by the following academic year.

Decade-Long Financial Burden from Affiliated Colleges Addressed
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that for the past ten years, the SBB University had not been collecting examination and affiliation fees from its associated colleges, which placed a substantial financial burden on SBBU as it continued to manage exam-related expenses. However, thanks to recent administrative efforts, the university has recovered Rs3.5 million in outstanding dues within three months. These recovered funds have been strategically invested in improving campus infrastructure and enhancing the university environment for students and faculty alike.

Campus Renovations and Facility Upgrades Underway
Prof Mehdi shared that the recovered funds have been utilized to implement various development projects on campus. These include improved lighting in classrooms and corridors, fresh wall paint, installation of false ceilings, and the construction of a fully equipped syndicate hall with recording features. A newly designed faculty lounge named ‘Lyari Jeans’ has been introduced, reflecting a focus on design and comfort. Additionally, a modern cafeteria is being built for students, while refurbishment efforts are actively ongoing in the universitys gymnasium.

University Overcomes Neglect Without Government Funding
Reflecting on the condition of the university at the start of his tenure, Prof Mehdi described a severely neglected campus environment, with broken windows, damaged ceilings, exposed electrical wiring, and classrooms lacking essential amenities like ceiling fans. Despite the absence of federal or provincial funds for infrastructure development, the university administration managed to carry out all renovation work independently. These upgrades were aimed at transforming SBBU into a functional and respectable institution that fosters an environment conducive to academic growth.
