Punjab to Open Pakistan Pioneering AI University

Punjab is set to host Pakistan’s inaugural Artificial Intelligence AI University, a groundbreaking initiative that will offer students advanced studies in AI, robotics, machine learning, and other emerging fields of science. The announcement was made by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday, signaling a major leap forward in the nation’s technological and academic landscape. During the launch of a laptop distribution program in Faisalabad, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stressed the need to equip students with the skills necessary to excel in a competitive global environment. She emphasized, “Our students should not fall behind; they must lead in every field.” The establishment of the AI university in Punjab is a step toward nurturing talent in emerging technologies that are driving the future.

New Educational Initiatives for Students

In addition to the AI university, the Chief Minister announced a new initiative aimed at providing financial support to students. This will include loans of up to Rs. 30 million to fund education, part-time work, or business ventures. The provincial government also plans to offer free land to students wishing to establish businesses, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to society.

Expansion of Laptop Distribution Scheme

As part of ongoing efforts to support students, the Punjab government will scale up its laptop distribution program. The distribution will rise from 30,000 laptops this year to 50,000 next year, with plans to further extend the initiative. By next year, the government aims to distribute 100,000 laptops to students scoring above 65% in public universities and colleges. Additionally, scholarships will be introduced for students in their third and fourth years of study to further assist their academic journeys.

In her speech, she humorously mentioned how students are increasingly turning to tools like ChatGPT for academic research. However, she stressed that Pakistan must focus on cultivating a culture of research and modern education, especially in rapidly advancing fields like AI. “China is teaching AI to children as young as fifth grade, while we are still caught up in outdated narratives,” she remarked, calling for a shift in focus towards education that prepares students for global challenges.
