Current Solar Coverage and Statistics Requested
Authorities have directed officials to compile updated data on schools already using solar power. Currently, there are 861 operational higher and secondary schools in Punjab, including 21 in Lahore that still need to be converted. So far, only four schools in Lahore have made the switch. The new data will help evaluate the extent of conversion and identify gaps.
Deadline and Data Submission Orders Issued
A formal directive has been issued by the education department requiring school heads to submit complete information about solar conversion progress by June 30, 2025. The purpose is to gather accurate insights and develop an implementation timeline. School principals have been warned that failure to provide the requested data may result in disciplinary action.
Some Schools Self-Financing Solar Installations
According to sources, several institutions have independently adopted solar energy without official funding. Rana Liaquat Ali, General Secretary of the Punjab Teachers uni on PTU, confirmed that due to budget constraints, some schools had no choice but to finance solar panels themselves. In some cases, administrators even collected Rs. 15,000 from teachers to purchase solar equipment.
uni on Demands Free Solar Panels for All Schools
Rana Liaquat Ali has strongly urged the government to supply solar panels free of cost to all schools in Punjab. He stressed that if the solar transition is to be fair and practical, it must be supported by public funding. This would prevent financial exploitation of school staff and ensure a smooth, province-wide adoption of renewable energy solutions.
