Punjab Reviews School Schedule to Reclaim Lost Academic Days
Punjabs Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, has announced that the provincial government is exploring a major overhaul of the school academic calendar. This initiative follows growing concerns that lengthy summer holidays and frequent unplanned closures are taking a significant toll on students learning continuity. Currently, schools in Punjab manage to stay operational for roughly 140 days a year, falling short of the ideal target of 180 instruction days.

To bridge this educational shortfall, several proposals are being evaluated. One notable suggestion includes implementing an alternating weekly schedule or conducting classes on alternate Saturdays once schools reopen after the summer break. Furthermore, the administration is considering giving schools green-lit approval to organize academic summer camps lasting between 30 and 45 days. This approach intends to keep students intellectually engaged and prevent them from losing study momentum during prolonged absences.
Recognizing the diverse challenges within the educational sector, the minister emphasized that a revised calendar would be developed in close partnership with private schools. The government is also designing contingency teaching strategies to counter unexpected shutdowns, alongside re-evaluating how recent Friday weekly closures have impacted overall teaching hours.
However, a one-size-fits-all approach will not be forced. The provincial government has given assurances that any definitive adjustments to the calendar will closely account for regional weather patterns. This is especially vital given the extreme summer heat waves experienced across South Punjab, paired with the structural and infrastructure limitations found in various public schools.
