Punjab PGET Requirement for Medical Residency Admissions From 2027
Doctors planning to pursue postgraduate medical residency training in Punjab will need to meet a new admission requirement beginning with the January 2027 induction cycle. The Punjab government has made the Post Graduate Entrance Test PGET compulsory for candidates seeking admission to Level-III residency programmes. The policy is intended to introduce a standardized evaluation process before applicants become eligible for postgraduate medical training in the province.
PGET Becomes Mandatory for MS, MD, MDS and FCPS Programmes
Under the revised policy, candidates applying for MS, MD, MDS, and FCPS residency programmes must successfully qualify for the PGET before they can be considered for induction. The University of Health Sciences UHS, Lahore has been assigned the responsibility of conducting the entrance Exam. To achieve eligibility, applicants must obtain at least the 75th percentile, which has been set as the minimum qualifying for the new test.
Merit Criteria Remain Unchanged
While the introduction of the Post Graduate Entrance Test adds a new eligibility requirement, officials have clarified that the existing merit and Punjab medical residency admission criteria for Level-III postgraduate residency programmes will continue to apply. Passing the entrance Exam will qualify candidates for consideration, but final selection will still be determined according to the established induction policy and merit framework issued by the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department.
UHS to Release Exam Schedule and Guidelines
The University of Health Sciences will announce the PGET application process, Exam schedule, syllabus, test pattern, and other important instructions separately. Medical graduates interested in postgraduate specialization are encouraged to monitor official notifications and prepare in advance for the new admission process. The policy marks a significant change in postgraduate medical education in Punjab, aiming to enhance transparency, academic standards, and the quality of residency training across the province.
