Punjab Launches Comprehensive School Building Audit
Following recent tragic infrastructure incidents in Lahore, Punjab Chief Minister has issued a decisive mandate for an immediate province-wide safety audit of all educational institutions in Punjab. This initiative is a critical response to the recent collapse of school infrastructure in Baghbanpura, which underscored the urgent need for stringent oversight of building integrity. The provincial administration has declared that the physical security and well-being of students are the absolute priority, signaling a shift toward zero tolerance for substandard construction and negligence in the Punjab education sector.
Mandatory Fitness Certification and Regulatory Compliance
The School Education Department Punjab has made structural safety a non-negotiable requirement for all academic operations. Schools and academies are now required to obtain and display a verified building fitness certificate issued by the relevant municipal and engineering authorities. Minister for School Education has clarified that any institution failing to secure these necessary approvals—including proper No Objection Certificates NOCs for building extensions—will face immediate closure. This directive applies to all public and private schools, with authorities currently identifying non-compliant facilities for enforcement actions, including the sealing of unregistered academies.
Government-Led Crackdown on Negligence
To ensure the efficacy of these safety measures, the Punjab government is streamlining the registration process through the Punjab Education Private Registration Information System PEPRIS. School administrators are being held personally accountable for maintaining the structural stability of their premises. The administration has also encouraged parents and the general public to report any educational setups that appear unsafe or lack formal registration. Through this proactive educational infrastructure audit, the provincial government aims to establish a secure learning environment, ensuring that every child in Punjab can pursue their studies without the risk of preventable building failures.
