Punjab Introduces New Admission Policy for Medical and Dental Colleges

The Punjab government has rolled out an updated admission policy for medical and dental colleges across the province. The policy, which was approved by the provincial cabinet, was officially implemented through a notification issued by the Specialized Healthcare Department on Friday. Key Changes for Islamabad Students

A notable adjustment in the policy affects students from Islamabad. Under the new rules, only three seats have been allocated for Islamabad-based students in Punjab’s medical colleges, removing their previous eligibility for open merit admissions in MBBS programs. This change has disappointed many students from the federal capital who once had broader opportunities to compete for admission based on merit.

Expansion of Medical Education in Narowal

In addition to changes affecting admissions, Narowal Medical College has been granted approval to admit 100 students for the current academic year. This decision will enhance medical education opportunities within the province by increasing the available seats for aspiring medical students.

Application Deadlines and Admission Schedule

The government has also outlined the timeline for the upcoming admission process:

Government Medical Colleges: Applications will be accepted from October 21 to November 4, 2024.

Private Medical Colleges: The application window will be open from November 5 to November 19, 2024.

Government Dental Colleges: Applications will be accepted between November 20 and December 4, 2024.

Private Dental Colleges: The submission period will run from December 5 to December 19, 2024.

Commencement of Classes

The new academic calendar has been set, with classes for MBBS programs scheduled to start on February 1, 2025. For Bachelor of Dental Surgery BDS programs, courses will begin on March 1, 2025.

UHS to Oversee Admissions

The University of Health Sciences UHS will be responsible for overseeing the entire admissions process for both medical and dental colleges in Punjab. This ensures a standardized and transparent process for all applicants.

The updated policy aims to streamline admissions while also addressing the educational needs of the province’s growing student population, especially with the addition of new seats and institutions.
