Punjab HED Launches Counseling Centers in Government Colleges

The Higher Education Department Punjab HED has introduced dedicated counseling centers in government colleges across the province, offering students access to a wide range of support services. These centers aim to assist students with mental health concerns, academic challenges, and career planning under one integrated system. New Initiative Brings Mental Health and Career Guidance Services to Campuses

The program was officially launched in Lahore, addressing increasing concerns about student stress and lack of career readiness. Initially set up in selected colleges, the initiative will gradually expand to all districts by the end of the 2026–27 academic session.

Each counseling center is designed as a comprehensive support hub, providing multiple services in one place. Students can benefit from psychological counseling, stress management sessions, and mental health support, including crisis intervention. In addition, the centers offer career counseling, aptitude assessments, job placement guidance, and professional development workshops to prepare students for future careers.

The facilities also focus on broader student well-being, including health awareness, hygiene education, academic mentoring, and financial literacy. Special attention is given to underprivileged students through socio-economic guidance, scholarship assistance, and referral services for specialized medical or psychological care when needed.

In Lahore, priority has been given to major educational zones such as Johar Town, Model Town, and Township. One of the key centers is being established at the Johar Town campus linked to Government College Women University Faisalabad, making services more accessible for students in surrounding areas. A helpline and walk-in support system are also available to ensure easy access.

To further streamline student services, HED has launched an online admission and facilitation portal through its official website. Students applying for undergraduate programs can now complete their registration digitally and will automatically be connected to the nearest counseling center for orientation, career mapping, and mental health evaluation before starting their academic journey.

This initiative is part of a broader policy shift in 2026, where HED has emphasized the importance of mental health by making annual screenings mandatory in higher education institutions. The newly established centers will serve as focal points for these assessments, helping identify and address issues such as anxiety, depression, and academic burnout at an early stage.
