Punjab Govt Takes Action Against Early School Timings Amid Smog Crisis
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced that the Chief Minister of Punjab has directed the immediate shutdown of all under-construction buildings, roads, and sites that are not complying with environmental safety protocols. This initiative is part of the government’s urgent efforts to tackle the worsening smog situation across the province. Private Schools Warned for Opening Before 8:45 AM as Smog Control Measures Intensify
The minister cautioned the Private Schools Association that strict action will be taken against institutions opening before 8:45 a.m., emphasizing adherence to the government’s schedule aimed at minimizing smog exposure. She also advised children, elderly individuals, and patients to avoid outdoor activities between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., and after 7 p.m., when smog levels are typically higher.
Marriyum Aurangzeb reported a notable decrease in crop residue burning, attributing the improvement to drone surveillance. She added that Punjab is moving towards climate-resilient policies, enforcing a zero-tolerance approach to unchecked construction, vehicle emissions, and the use of plastics.
Additionally, night patrols by Assistant Commissioners, Police, and the Agriculture Department have been intensified in all districts. The province has completed the mapping of green zones, and its environmental monitoring system is now fully operational to ensure effective implementation of these anti-smog measures.
